Established in 1887, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) is a non-profit organization with a mission of managing athletic events and promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports, especially running. The BAA is the organizer of the Boston Marathon, the world's oldest and most prestigious marathon, held annually since 1897 on Patriots Day. The 100th running was held in 1996 and drew the world's largest field of finishers (35,868).
