In the heart of downtown Boston, the Otis House is the last surviving mansion in what was Boston's most fashionable eighteenth-century neighborhood. Architect Charles Bulfinch designed the house for Harrison Gray Otis and Sally Foster Otis, members of Boston's elite in the years after the Revolution. Visitors learn about the upper-class Otis family, life in the Federal Era, and the later history of the house, when it served as a clinic and boardinghouse. The restoration of the Otis House and its brilliantly colored wallpapers, carpeting, and high-style furnishings is based on meticulous historical and scientific research. Beacon Hill Walking Tours are available for groups and house tours can be customized. Space is available at the Otis House for lectures, meetings, and receptions. Beacon Hill, the Boston Common, Quincy Market, and the North End are all within walking distance.
