Green Convention Centers |
BostonUSA had three green
convention centers that have comprehensive recycling
programs, energy efficiency achievements, and other
environmentally-friendly practices.
Boston
Convention Center & Exhibition Center and the Hynes Convention
Center
The Massachusetts
Convention Center Authority (MCCA), which is responsible for these
two convention centers, has implemented many green business
practices. Energy Efficient Building Design and Equipment: The
Boston Convention Center & Exhibition Center, opened in 2004,
has many state-of-the-art energy efficient design features,
including an advanced building management system, high efficiency
lighting, and occupancy sensors that disable lighting when space is
vacated. Comprehensive Recycling Program: The MCCA has implemented a
well-designed and comprehensive recycling program at its two Boston
facilities. They recycle food waste, grease, pallets, glass, metals,
bottles and cans, cardboard, plastics-including shrink wrap, carpet
and padding, and paper. Exhibitors who anticipate excessive waste
can arrange for periodic waste pick up with the customer service
desk; and their MCCA Event Managers coordinate special recycling
needs for various conventions. The MCCA was recognized for its
recycling program by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection and U.S. EPA who bestowed the WasteWise Waste Reduction
Leadership Award to them in November 2006. Environmentally
Preferable Paper Products: The two convention centers use Green Seal
certified paper supplies. For example, all restroom paper products
are 100% recycled content, including 25 - 35% post consumer
material. Environmentally Preferable Cleaning Products: The MCCA
uses green cleaning products for daily bathroom and public space
cleaning. Indoor Air Quality: The MCCA is converting to the use of
greener vacuums that have a filter which doesn't allow dust partials
back into the air. For more information call 617-867-8286 visithttp://www.advantageboston.com.
Seaport World
Trade Center The Seaport World Trade Center and Seaport
Hotel have implemented the Seaport Saves initiative, which fosters
conservation in their facilities. Some of their achievements are
listed below. Energy Efficient Lighting: Energy-conserving, compact
fluorescent bulbs have been installed in the Seaport Garage and the
Seaport World Trade Center. A total of 2,012 fixtures were replaced
throughout both buildings. These bulbs use about 70 percent
less energy than ordinary bulbs. Energy Efficient Roof: All
buildings on the Seaport World Trade Center campus have a Sarnafil
EnergySmart Roof system, which is designed to reduce atmospheric
heat and conserve energy. Green Roof: The World Trade Center East
Podium has a green roof that uses a non-irrigated 5-inch deep,
pre-vegetated mat which contains sedum plants. This
eco-friendly roof offers many long-term benefits, including reduced
run-off, and energy conservation. Green Space: Recognizing the value
of open space, the Seaport World Trade Center complex features 2.1
acres of park land throughout the campus - 11% of the entire
property. Eastport Park and the Plaza Gardens have become a valuable
amenity and oasis for guests and neighbors. Greener Transportation
Alternatives: Seaport Companies encourages their employees to ride
public transportation by subsidizing 50 percent of their commuting
costs. This is in addition to a partnership with Seaport
Transportation Management Association, which offers carpool and walk
or bike to work programs. Also, they house two Zipcar vehicles on site. Zipcars allow
employees and guests to use mass transit to get to work, knowing
that a vehicle is available if they need one. Recycling: The
convention center recycles cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum,
white paper, cooking oil and newspaper. In 2006, they recycled 178
tons of material, achieving a recycling rate of 34%. For more information visit http://www.wtcb.com.

New and notable:
With the addition of energy-efficient
windows and improved insulation Boston's oldest continuously
operating hotel, the Boston Omni Parker House, has
taken on new environmental responsibilities. The hotel has also
added individual guestroom heating and cooling units to further
minimize energy usage. The new Hotel Indigo
in Newton is environmentally friendly with initiatives such as a
cogeneration power system that recaptures used energy, as well as a
voluntary conservation program that encourages guests to re-use
linens and towels. The hotel is committed to using recyclable glass
and reducing plastic use wherever possible and takeout meals will be
packaged in biodegradable containers made of sugar cane. Hotel
Indigo is adjacent to the Riverside MBTA Green Line
station and a short drive to the Massachusetts
Turnpike
Linked to the Hynes Convention Center via skybridge, the
Westin Copley Place has recently been making its
way to becoming more environmentally-friendly with its new energy
conservation and waste reduction initiatives. For example, 5% of all
electricity consumed at the hotel comes from reneewable wind and
hydroelectric sources. The Westin Copley Place has
also implemented electricity-saving projects such as upgrading
lighting from T-12 to T-8 inaddition to using LED lighting
in many areas. Recycling has become a priority - cardboard,
office papers, fluorescent light bulbs, bottles and cans are no
longer thrown away - and all food wastes are now composted.
Housekeeping cleaning chemicals have been swapped for Eco-Logic
Green Seal products as well. An organic herb garden - to be used in
both hotel restaurants, Turner Fisheries and Bar 10 - has
even been planted in the rotunda of the hotel.

New and
notable:
Located in Brookline, The Fireplace is
"where a real 'foodie' can experience a truly 'Green Restaurant' as
well as a 'true taste of Boston,' according to chef and owner Jim
Solomon. In addition to winning numerous local awards, The
Fireplace is known for being the first restaurant in Boston
to be certified by the Green Restaurant
Association. Since its "green certification," Solomon and
his restaurant have come up with several new environmental
initiatives, including tinted windows, energy efficient lighting,
pre-wash spray valves, glass, metal, cardboard and paper recycling,
primarily locally grown and often organic options, no polystyrene
foam, and the use of recycled paper towels and to go containers.
The Fireplace was also featured for its
environmental awareness in many magazines, most recently in the
current issue of Green Business Quarterly, and Solomon is
on the Board of Directors for Boston Green
Tourism.
As part of its ongoing commitment to using local and
sustainable ingredients, the Oak Room at the
Fairmont Copley Plaza is partnering with
Chestnut Farms - known for its hormone and
antibiotic-free meat products - in Central Massachusetts, to offer
guests a 100-mile feature where everything on the plate has come
from less than 100 miles away. In addition to ingredients from under
100 miles away, the Oak Room will also include
ingredients grown less than 100-yards away in the hotel's rooftop
garden. Back for its second season, the garden is expanding
and will include primarily herbs such as parsley, chives, rosemary,
thyme, lavender, mint and a variety of sage and basils.
Strawberries, watermelons, cantaloupes, blueberries, sea berries and
dwarf apple trees will also be grown.
Sebastian Porto and Jacqueline Kelly, the chefs at
Bravo, the restaurant at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston are committed to the environment. Their menus
emphasize sustainable items and reflect their work with local
farmers to pick the freshest foods off of the harvest calendar.
Porto and Kelly also work with vendors such as Brandt
Beef, a company that prides itself on natural feeding
practices and humane treatment of animals, and sustainable seafood
vendors that are approved by Monterey Bay's Seafood
Watch.
Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Langham Boston's
Café Fleuri is just one example as to how the
restaurant supports sustainable farming and the use of local
ingredients. The brunch's theme, "Sea, Garden, Forest and
Farm" celebrates Café Fleuri's
Green Restaurant Association certification by
sourcing 30 percent of his ingredients from local and sustainable
producers. Additionally, in order to maintain our green
certification, the restaurant is beginning several new initiatives
each year. Recent changes include removing all Styrofoam from the
hotel as well as installing an ozone generator, which reduced hot
water usage by 50 percent.
Vox Populi has gone green and switched over
its entire beef menu by partnering with Brandt
Beef, a family owned, premium natural beef producer that is
dedicated to sustainable green practices and serves the upscale
restaurant and retail markets. Without using the antibiotics,
hormones, or wasteful chemicals, Brandt Beef has
virtually eliminated their use of synthetic fertilizer and
pesticides that harms the environment utilizing an on-site
sustainable composting operation. The Brandt brand,
supported by Vox Populi through their new
partnership. uses the most humane techniques of animal husbandry
known today, exerting a high level of control over cattle selection
and harvesting practices. Committed to preserving the environment
for the next generation, Brandt also uses
responsible irrigation, crop rotation practices, and a vast compost
procedure. Adding to this aspect of its new "green" image,
Vox Populi has also started recycling all its used
beer bottles, as well as installed fluorescent coiled 1 watt LED
environmentally-friendly light bulbs in its
bathrooms.

The New Boston Children's Museum: Green Design &
Green Fairs
In conjunction with Boston Mayor Tom
Menino, The American Institute of Architects has named the
new Boston Children's Museum one of the
greenest buildings in Boston. The Boston Children's
Museum has incorporated green roofs, storm water
reclamation (reducing run-off into Fort Point Channel), new
infrastructure and fixtures, and recycled, local, and low-emitting
building materials into its new environmentally-friendly design.
Further demonstration the museum's commitment to green living are
its "green" fairs sponsored by National Grid which serve to educate
visitors about ways they can decrease their impact on the
environment. Museum staff and local environmental organizations will
present programs and activities that demonstrate the importance of
being green at home. Transportation, "The Three 'R's" and Energy are
