NEW
First Two Weeks of
Boston
Pops' 123rd Spring Season Include Opening Night with Grammy Winner
Natalie Cole, Kickoff to Season-Long Tribute
to Leonard Bernstein, and a Visit by
Garrison Keillor of "A Prairie Home
Companion"
The 2008 Boston Pops season is filled with
legendary songs and performers from the
worlds of classical, jazz, gospel, pop, and
more. During the first two weeks of the
season, the Pops offer classic and
contemporary hits from Grammy-winner
Natalie Cole (May 7), timeless favorites
from Leonard Bernstein (May 7-10, 15-17),
and a visit from
Garrison Keillor of “A Prairie Home
Companion” (May 13-14).
Opening Night at Pops and the 2008 Boston
Pops season are both sponsored by Fidelity
Investments, marking Fidelity’s 14th year as
the Pops’ major corporate sponsor and its
ninth as the Opening Night sponsor. Photos
and bios of artists appearing in the 2008
Boston Pops season are available at
www.bostonpops.org/presskit .
Award-winning singer/songwriter
Natalie Cole , best known for her
interpretations of her father’s classic hits
on her Grammy-winning album “Unforgettable,”
is the special guest for the opening night
concert of the 2008 Boston Pops season on
Wednesday, May 7. Opening Night also marks
the beginning of a season-long tribute to
Massachusetts ’ own
musical legend Leonard Bernstein, who would
have turned 90 years old this year. In honor
of this special Bernstein anniversary, a new
film, produced by Susan Dangel and edited by
Dick Bartlett, is being presented with live
accompaniment as the Boston Pops perform
John Williams’ “For Lenny.” Other highlights
of the Bernstein tribute feature the Boston
Pops Orchestra in music from the ballet
Fancy Free and the Academy Award-winning
film On
the Waterfront . All guests are
also invited to a special Opening Night
reception featuring food, wine, and
champagne prior to the performance.
On May 9 and 10 and again on May 15-17, the
Bernstein tribute program showcases the
talents of students from The Boston
Conservatory Musical Theater Division
performing several selections from such
beloved Bernstein musicals as
Candide
, On the
Town ,
West Side
Story , and
Wonderful
Town . Among the popular songs to
be performed are “
New
York, New
York ,” “A Little
Bit in Love,” “One Hand, One Heart,” “The
Best of All Possible Worlds,” and “Make Our
Garden Grow.”
Week two begins with a visit from radio star
Garrison Keillor who brings his
award-winning program “A Prairie Home
Companion” to
Boston live on
the Symphony Hall stage. In addition to
Keillor’s wonderful stories and inimitable
humor, musical selections of the May 13 and
14 performances include “Lake Wobegon Hymn”
and such Americana classics as “All Night, All Day” and
“My Old Kentucky Home.” The
Garrison Keillor series is sponsored by
Pearle Vision.
Throughout both weeks one and two, the Pops
will be premiering a new film set to the
music of Leroy Anderson's classic “Fiddle
Faddle." This film, which chronicles the
lives of many of the Pops’ talented
performers and which was also produced by
Susan Dangel and edited by Dick Bartlett,
will serve as a preview to the Pops’ tribute
to
Anderson
which will take place on June 3.
