1. July 4, 2008 Boston Pops & Fireworks Celebration details America Turns 232!

·       Boston hosts America’s greatest Birthday Party every July 4th.

·       The 123-year-old Boston Pops - led by conductors, from Arthur Fiedler to John Williams (composer of Star Wars & many other highly popular movie scores)  and now Keith Lockhart perform outdoors along the Chales River at the Esplanade  in a concert that draws a quarter-million visitors and features popular musicians, , a singing State Trooper at times, real ear-splitting cannons  & local church bells synchronized  during the traditional 1812 Overture that culminate with spectacular fireworks over the river.

·       The event began in 1929 under conductor Arthur Fiedler. The  bandshell was replaced by an impressive Art Deco Hatch Memorial Shell in 1941 The concert set a world record in 1976. The fireworks are not broadcast live nationally on CBS TV.

·       Among memorable events of the Fiedler era were the 50th  Anniversary Esplanade concert of July 4, 1978; the building of the Hatch Shell in time for the Esplanade season of 1940; the occasion of the Maestro's seventy-fifth birthday, when his son Peter presented him a surprise gift on behalf of the whole family: an honest-to-goodness, full-size fire engine(!); and the Esplanade concert of July 4, 1976, which was heard by more than r 400.000 people, declared by the Guinness Book of World Records the largest single audience for a classical music concert.

·       The July 4th event ( 8:30pm concert and 10:30pm  fireworks) & the July 3rd event (no fireworks) The event (concert and fireworks) takes place on the Esplanade in Boston along the Charles River. No ticket is required. The concert takes place from the 67-year-old Hatch Shell stage.
At the Esplanade there is July 4th merchandise and food. including shirts and hats, available for sale by cash only on the 3rd and the 4th. If you watch from the Cambridge side of the Charles River  there are sound towers, concessions, restrooms and excellent views of the fireworks.

·       The July 4th Fireworks : 10:30pm (nationally broadcast on CBS TV)

·       No one does fireworks quite like Boston; this year's will be the largest and most complex Boston Fourth of July pyrotechnic display to date. More than 20 thousand pounds of explosives will be used for the display, which will include the largest shells yet to be used - ten-inch diameter shells that will climb to 1500 feet - nearly one and a half times the height of the Hancock Tower. This year's fireworks have an international flair as well - devices are being imported from Portugal, Spain, China, Japan, and Italy. Pyro Spectaculars and Eric Tucker are the masterminds behind the display, which has long been viewed as the premier pyrotechnic experience among America's Fourth of July celebrations. 9:00 am – Oval Opens 8:30 pm - 10:30 pm – Concert 10:30 pm – Fireworks Show
