How to Make Smart Seafood Choices
1. Stay informed.
Many things come into play when determining if a seafood choice is
ocean-friendly. The Fish of the Month Program makes that choice simpler for you
by highlighting seafood that is caught or farmed in an environmentally
responsible way. Make yourself familiar with the list and try these seafood
items when dining out or visiting your grocery store.
2. Ask questions.
There are two main questions you should ask when you purchase seafood.
Where is this seafood from?
How was it caught or farmed?
Asking these questions does a couple of things. If your seafood provider has the
information you’re asking for, you can use it to make an ocean-friendly seafood
choice. Reward restaurants and retailers that provide this information by
frequenting their establishments.
Asking questions also lets retailers and restaurateurs know that customers want
this sort of information. Even if they don’t immediately know the answer to your
question, they will be more likely to find the answer if you ask.
3. Try something new.
Fish of the Month selections may not all be seafood choices you usually buy, but
give them a try. You may find a new, ocean-friendly option that you really
enjoy. Try them out with the easy-to-use recipes on the Fish of the Month
website.
If you don’t see it, ask for it.
Some Fish of the Month selections may be more difficult to find than others. If
you don’t see the seafood you’re looking for, ask about it. Many retailers will
special order items for their customers if requested. Restaurants and retailers
want to fulfill their customer’s needs, and requesting an ocean-friendly seafood
choice is the first step in bringing it to you.
