Historians at Old Sturbridge Village are expanding their celebration of early New England harvest traditions with two new events: an Oct. 16 appearance by food editor Susie Middleton, author of Fresh from the Farm: A Year of Recipes and Stories; and a "From Field to Table" weekend featuring local foods, harvest activities and ox plowing and driving matches set for Oct. 18-19. Longtime editor of Fine Cooking magazine and now an editor-at-large, Susie Middleton is the author of the recently published Fresh from the Farm: A Year of Recipes and Stories. Her previous cookbooks include Fast, Fresh, & Green and The Fresh & Green Table. She gives recipe tips on WGBH Radio, writes the popular "sixburnersue.com" blog, and contributes to the Huffington Post. An advocate for sustainable agriculture, Middleton operates a small farm on Martha's Vineyard.
At her Oct. 16 talk at Old Sturbridge Village, Middleton will highlight the preparation of seasonal local vegetables, many harvested from the Village's gardens. Admission is $15 per person ($13 for OSV Members). Doors open at 6:00 p.m., a cash bar will be available, and Middleton will sign books prior to her talk at 7:00 p.m.
"From Field to Table" Weekend October 18-19
Highlights of "From Field to Table Weekend" include a Parade of Oxen, an ox driving competition, and a plowing match between up to a dozen local teamsters and their oxen. Visitors can also try their hands at plowing with the Village oxen, help thresh rye and harvest corn, potatoes, and mangel wurzels, an heirloom vegetable popular with early New England farmers. OSV's ox-powered Cider Mill will be in action, and beekeepers will demonstrate extracting honey.
Old Sturbridge Village historians will demonstrate a variety of ways to prepare and preserve and fruits and vegetables and will offer tours of the root cellar and the Village orchards. They will also put the gardens "to bed" for the season and demonstrate seed saving and preparing spring bulbs for the next season.
Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is one of the largest living history museums in the country. The museum is open daily 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.
