Every year as cold, snowy weather sets in, cities and towns across the country rely on road salt to help keep walkways and streets safe during travel. Around Boston, the massive salt mounds in Chelsea are a familiar sight, but where does all this salt come from? Photographer and filmmaker Allison Cekala takes visitors on a journey to the Atacama Desert in Chile, a prominent road salt source. Follow along through images and video that chronicle how this salt is extracted, processed, and shipped 4,500 miles to Massachusetts.
Road Salt is the master's thesis project of local student and artist Allison Cekala, who is completing her Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University.
