The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), offers new exhibitions, concerts and lectures

This August, an exhibition of contemporary artist Shinique Smith (born in 1971) debuts at the MFA, along with a new installation of abstract works in the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art. In the Asian Paintings Gallery, an exhibition dedicated to Jain paintings displays visually striking examples of Indian art.

Also at the MFA this August, Concerts in the Courtyard continue with Patty Larkin (August 6), Hot Club of Cowtown (August 13), Sierra Hull (August 14), Debo Band (August 20) and David Maxwell and Maximum Blues (August 27). Or, visitors can spend an evening learning about The Art of Maine, through Hopper and Homer's landscapes and the words of Maine-inspired poets. Fall lectures and courses, including The Ruth and Carl J. Shapiro Celebrity Lecture series, go on sale August 21.

New August exhibitions include:

  • Shinique Smith: Bright Matter (August 23, 2014-March 1, 2015): Sweeping calligraphic and collaged paintings along with large-scale sculptures of recycled garments come together in Shinique Smith's first exhibition in New England.
  • Landscape, abstracted (August 16, 2014-May 30, 2017): The Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art is revitalized as the Upper Cohen Galleria adopts a new theme: Landscape, abstracted. Approximately 10 newly installed works will be on view, including sculpture, paintings and new media.
  • Pure Souls: The Jain Path to Perfection (August 9-November 30, 2014): A group of paintings that have rarely been exhibited-early illustrated manuscripts and newly restored cloth paintings-come together with embroidered book covers and select sculptures to illuminate the sacred world of the Jain religion.
