BCEC Looks to Expand
On Monday, November 23, James Rooney, Executive Director of the MCCA and Paul Guzzi, President and CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce announced the creation of a Convention Partnership. The partnership is a 25-member working group of key stakeholders, opinion leaders and decision-makers. Meet Maureen Buckley, Director of Sales at the CVB
In late 1997, when the gavel went down announcing that Boston would finally build a new convention center on the South Boston waterfront, Maureen Buckley was the 1st new sales manager hired to help fill the new building with mega conventions. The Citywide Sales team, at the Greater Boston CVB, was already working hard to fill the Hynes Convention Center in the Back Bay but now Boston would have two buildings to fill. Maureen was assigned to the Washington, DC area association market and she was up for the challenge! Previously, Maureen opened the new Fleet Center (formerly known as the Boston Garden) selling luxury suites and seats; and prior to that 4-year assignment, she worked in sales and convention services for the Sheraton, Marriott and Omni hotels. In 2004, Maureen transitioned from the Citywide Sales team to the In-House sales team at the GBCVB, and in 2006 she was promoted to Director of Sales of that dedicated team of five sales professionals. Maureen still works with the DC market and would not give it up for all the tea in China (and Maureen really likes her tea). She also likes living in pretty places. Before moving to Boston in 1993, Maureen lived in Newport, RI and San Diego, CA.
Maureen has a degree in Political Science from Assumption College and in her free time enjoys following local and national politics. She also enjoys time with her large but close family, reading, biking, hiking and traveling. Maureen loves selling the cities of Boston and Cambridge! Her favorite part of the job is introducing new clients to all that Boston can offer their organization, and also the great relationships she has with her wonderful sales team and hotel partners.

Boston Hotels Take it on the Road
There is nothing better than Boston and that was the message that was communicated by the GBCVB, ten hotel partners, Amtrak and "Julia Childs" when we went on the road in November. The group visited clients in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA and gave everyone an update on What's New in Boston. "Julia" traveled with us and helped us stir up four great events. Some of the news that we shared included:
- Approximately 20 billion dollars has been spent on the infrastructure of our roadways in and around Boston, as well as to and from Logan International Airport. The elevated highway system, which once carried thousand of cars through the middle of Boston, was suppressed underground and replaced with the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. This mile and a half green space once again opens up Downtown Boston to the harbor and beyond.
- Over 50 million dollars has been spent renovating Boston area hotels and over 4,800 new hotel rooms have opened since 2002.
- Two hotels opened in Boston this fall. The W Boston opened in the Theater District with 235 guest rooms in October. The 114-room Ames Hotel, a Morgan's property, opened in November in the Financial District.

Key Sites
The holidays are upon us and Maureen, Stephanie and Lisa have their teams closing as much business as possible. Everyone is busy showing customers around Boston. Some highlights include:
- After meeting with Maureen and our partners in Washington this November, ASCD made a two day visit to Boston for a June 2011 meeting.
- American Cataract and Refractive Surgery was in town with Lisa wrapping up their final site for their spring 2010 meeting at the BCEC.
- Greg is working with the Uniform Law Commission to get a hotel contract signed for July 2013.
- Travis worked really hard to get a two year contarct with Red Hat, Inc. signed this fall. She and Toshiba showed the Meetings Team exactly what they could expect from the Boston hospitality community for their meetings in 2010 and 2011.
- While Stephanie was coordinating the meeting times for 175 planners at EIBTM in Barcelona, Jason and Michelle jumped in and helped with a major site for FIDI in April 2012.
