Late winter and early spring can be a wonderful time to enjoy some final ski or snowboard runs for the season. The days are longer, the sun is stronger, and the temperatures are more accommodating. But the snow still beckons. Sure, you could head to the mountains in northern New England. Or, you could get your skiing fix right here in Boston. Well, not exactly in Boston. It's Wachusett Mountain in Westminster, about 55 miles to the west. But your downhill adventure begins in Boston at North Station aboard the Ski Train. Every Saturday and Sunday through March 31, the MBTA welcomes mountain-bound passengers on its 8:35 a.m. commuter rail train to Fitchburg and accommodates them by reserving one car for ski and snowboard equipment. A Wachusett courtesy shuttle drives them from Fitchburg to the mountain and back to the train station at 4:45 p.m. for the return trip to Boston. The Ski Train fare is $10 each way. You might want to consider taking the train to Wachusett on Sunday, March 17, when the resort hosts a Green Day Celebration. No, the mountain won't be reverberating with the echoes of Billie Joe Armstrong and his punk rock comrades. But there will be music. The St. Patrick's Day event will include live Celtic bands and Irish fare.
