The Cercie Miller Quartet features four outstanding jazz musicians based in the Boston area: saxophonist Cercie Miller, pianist Tim Ray, bassist David Clark and drummer Bob Savine. The CMQ has appeared in the top venues and festivals of the New England region, garnering praise for fiery performances of original compositions and fresh interpretations of classic standards. In performance, Ms. Miller’s style is direct and commanding: critics have called her solos “torrid” and “scorching” (Bob Blumenthal, Boston Globe) and have called her a “versatile stylist with a penchant for melody as well as a take-no-prisoners streak that shows itself on her slashing alto solos” (Bob Young, Boston Herald). The Boston Globe described the music of the CMQ as “an astute mix of postbop jazz, Afro-Caribbean grooves, blues, pop, and even a little dash of the avant-garde.” Some of the guest artists that have appeared with The Cercie Miller Quartet have included Tiger Okoshi, Harvie Swartz, Fred Hersch, and Dominique Eade. With the release of “Dedication” (Stash Records) and “Blue Vistas” (Jazz Project) the CMQ reached out to communicate to a wider audience. In the words of one reviewer: “[Cercie Miller is] a really exciting alto saxophonist from the Boston area. She has formidable technique, and you can hear traces of everyone since Benny Carter in her playing; but what she really does is communicate emotion and feeling through her horn, which is what this business is supposed to be all about.” -Robert Tate, Jazz Now Magazine.
