On Thursday, April 23, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), hosts a virtual studio visit with artist Futura and a conversation with Grammy Award-winning musician Lupe Fiasco, streaming on Instagram Live, Facebook and YouTube.
Futura, one of the 12 artists featured in the exhibition Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation, embodies the seamless merging of visual art, design, and music so characteristic of the post-graffiti moment. Following the studio visit, Lupe Fiasco will share his thoughts on Jean-Michel Basquiat's enduring legacy and influence on contemporary hip-hop.
Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation is the first major exhibition to contextualize Basquiat's work in relation to hip-hop and marks the first time his extensive, robust and reflective portraiture of his Black and Latinx friends and fellow artists, including Futura, has been given prominence in scholarship on his oeuvre. On mfa.org and the MFA's Instagram Stories Highlights, followers can find an in-depth virtual primer on the exhibition, including images of artworks, wall texts, a curated Spotify playlist, video content, and more.
